First Thoughts

The more we play around with the Openmoko Freerunner, the more potential we see that it has to compliment our current offerings and mobile technology in general - most exciting! Although there are still a number of apparent flaws, these are being quickly worked out and are in any case dwarfed by the possibilities realised via the ability to write your own code for the device. We intend the Freerunner (and possibly other similar devices) to become a truely portable convergence device for both home and office, and look forward to continued development in this direction.

OpenMoko Freerunner

The OpenMoko Freerunner is now shipping, and we've got ours on order! Although it is still in very early stages, this platform opens up many exciting opportunities for mobile integration with many of our services by allowing us to write our own applications and modify existing ones. Watch this space!

VoIP System Management Strategy

When I meet new people, part of our first conversation invariably goes something like this:

Them: "So, what do you do for a job?"
Me: "I develop and maintain VoIP systems."
Them: "VoIP... VoIP... uh..."
Me: "Internet telephony? Skype?"
Them: "Oh, Skype! Free phonecalls!"

Now I don't expect the average non-geek to be interested in the complexities of VoIP, but the point is that the only information most people ever get about emerging technologies such as this is when the market realises that there might be a buck to be made off of it and starts ramming "information" down peoples' throats with advertising campaigns. This becomes viral when media outlets get hold of this same "information" and start repeating it verbatim, knowing nothing of what they speak but basking in the illusion that they're right up there on the fore-front of technology, and what you end up with is a crisis of oversimplification where a complex technology is synonymous not only with a brand name but a single benefit or feature which is almost always monetary because that's what sells best. Now when the company FD hears of this they either instantly pounce, more than happy to shell out for this magical black-box solution which is going to save them a load of money, or are completely skeptical and refuse to touch it. What does this have to do with a successful VoIP system management strategy?

We have a blog!

The aeneby.com blog page is now (mostly) functional, although the CSS isn't quite how we would like it yet - perhaps a good project for a snowy day. We'll be posting random pieces of information here from time to time, so check back and sign up for an account if you want to join in on the conversation.

The blog is powered by a simple, lightweight back-end called 'Chyrp', which actually works pretty well without trying to be all things to all men like Joomla! does but is not quite so full-featured as WordPress, so sits snugly somewhere between the two. Enjoy.
